{EDUCATION} Because higher levels of education lead to better employment opportunities and because roughly 47% of TGP adult members did not stay in school to get their high school diploma, The Gathering Place provides an educational opportunity for members to get their high school equivalency degree. We recently had a student pass all the tests to earn her degree and Melany Deem, our Education and Job Readiness program Manager, wrote this article for the latest TGP Post.

EARNING A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA
by Melany Deem, Education and Job Readiness Program Manager

This month we celebrated with a graduate from our high school equivalency program. Her class ate pizza and listened to her story about what it took for her to earn her diploma, what she will do next, and why it is important to her. In December, she will be able to walk onto the stage at Community College of Denver with a cap and gown. I am so proud of all of the work our students do here. Here are a few things that her classmates said:

• “I have been going to GED classes for two months now. And I can honestly say I’m enjoying it, not to mention I have learned so much in such a little time. I don’t know how long it’s going to take me to achieve this goal, but I’m not going to stop until it is done.”
• “I appreciate all that TGP has done for me. I’m looking forward to passing my GED test in the next few months.”
• “I’d like to earn my GED because I want my kids to be proud of me, and for them to be able to be motivated and do good in school. I put the GED aside for so long and regret waiting.”
• “When I graduate I’d like to go to college to learn how to do hair and nails.”
• “To me TGP is a second chance place, a place for help, a place to rest and meditate, and a place to meet your goals. Jason, our GED class teacher, is so considerate and the best of the best. TGP has so much to offer the community and it improves a person’s self-esteem.”

About 10 times a year we have an intake for high school equivalency classes. During an intake, students are tested and we talk about the program. Classes, tutoring, and writing assistance are offered every morning Monday-Thursday. It takes determination to earn a diploma. Our last intake this year will be Friday, October 28th 9:00-noon. If you are interested in earning your diploma, this could be your chance…
