Shedding Light on the Realities of Single Mothers Living in Poverty

In the fabric of American society, single mothers constitute a significant portion, shouldering the immense responsibility of raising families solo. Behind the statistics lie real stories of struggle, resilience, and the pursuit of stability. Recent data sheds light on their experiences, revealing a complex web of challenges that demand attention and action.

Here are five key insights into the lives of single mothers facing poverty:

  1. Financial Strain in Colorado: A startling 62% of single mothers in Colorado lack adequate income to meet their basic needs. This statistic unveils the harsh reality many mothers face in the state, where the cost of living often outpaces wages, leaving them on the brink of financial instability.
  2. Single Mothers Are the Majority: Single mothers head nearly 80% of the 11 million single-parent families across the United States. This staggering figure underscores the widespread prevalence of single motherhood. It highlights the need for targeted support and resources tailored to their unique circumstances.
  3. Employment Does Not Equate to Security: Contrary to common assumptions, employment does not always guarantee stability for single mothers. Shockingly, 27.3% of homeless single mothers in the U.S. are employed, illustrating the disconnect between work and economic security in the face of systemic barriers and insufficient wages.
  4. Trauma and Abuse Compound Challenges: The journey of homelessness is often fraught with trauma. More than 92% of homeless mothers have endured severe physical and/or sexual abuse, painting a poignant picture of the intersecting vulnerabilities faced by this marginalized population. The scars left by past trauma can impede their ability to access resources and rebuild their lives, perpetuating the cycle of poverty.
  5. Racial Disparities Exacerbate Inequality: For single mothers of color, the challenges of poverty are exacerbated by systemic inequities. A staggering 74% of single mothers of color face income insufficiency, which translates into heightened housing insecurity and limited opportunities for upward mobility.

These statistics, compiled by the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and the Colorado Center on Law and Policy, offer a sobering glimpse into the lived experiences of single mothers living in poverty. At The Gathering Place, we recognize the significance of these numbers and the real people they represent.

We are committed to providing personalized support to mothers navigating the complex terrain of poverty.
